Looking For Something Different
| | Details about me: | I love Lebanon and i love Beirut, and i'm having a wonderful time living here, but there's something missing. In some ways the experience of living here for me is like witnessing a laboratory experiment in political and social science - without participating. I have friends, foreigners and Lebanese, but i am having trouble meeting women even remotely like me. I am very sorry if anyone takes this as an insult, but the mandatory Beirut bimbo uniform of high heels, tight jeans, spaghetti-strap tops, lots of make-up, manicured nails - and maybe even some plastic surgery - is not exactly my style. It's not that superficially about appearance, but about everything that reflects. Is anybody here still into the arts? Who are the people renting out those far-from-the-mainstream films at CD Theque?!? Arabic music is beautiful - and Um Kultoum kicks Haifa's butt - but is anybody into jazz, funk, old rock'n'roll, hip-hop or anything not involving Britney Spears and Madonna? Does anybody still read? Is there someone out there who would like to talk about William S. Burroughs, Tom Wolfe, Amin Maalouf and Samuel Huntington? Did you notice when Bergman died this summer? Do you prefer Vittorio di Sica to Benicio del Toro? Then again, he was pretty good in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...
I feel like an alien in this country because money is not my top priority, and i don't ever plan to have a Mercedes or a BMW. I'm not into displaying what i own - i'm not really even into material things. I do yoga.
I work hard and i love what i do, and i have plenty of passion for plenty of things, but it just seems like my likes and dislikes are just not so common here. I am going to live here for a couple more years before moving on; your political leaders - all of them - are clowns, and this is not a place for me to stay. But i'm tired of not having a female partner. In the US people like me sometime get labelled as crunchy-granola types, or even hippies, or sometimes just freaks. Where are the crunchy people in Beirut?
